For expression of recombinant proteins, heterologous expression systems employing Escherichia coli, yeast, insect cells, and mammalian cells as hosts and cell-free protein synthesis system are widely used. Silkworm is attracting attention as an efficient protein production factory due to its high protein expression ability and ease of breeding. Because post-translational modifications such as glycosylation and phosphorylation are occurred, silkworm is very useful to product proteins from mammalians such as human with high efficiency. I am using the silkworm-BmNPV bacmid system which was developed in the Laboratory of Biotechnology (Prof. Enoch Y. Park and Assoc. Prof. Tatsuya Kato) for expression of various proteins, and am studying their structure-function relationships by biochemical experiments and X-ray protein crystallography.
